So this has been the first week of the Anxious Makers Collective! Haley’s been swamped with school and I’ve been swamped with mono, but we managed to get some good work done!
I, gentle reader, knit a hat.
The whole thing.
Haley is working on a knit/handwoven cowl scarf, and going to be writing about it soon! You can check out what she’s doing at her blog, From the Desk of Haley Williams!
I spent all of last weekend making my HAAAATTT
I learned how to knit from our childhood neighbor Aunt Mary Lou, and had a refresher course in my Woven + Nonwoven class in college last fall.
For this project, I first taught myself how to knit a cable by watching the how to on Loopy Mango’s website – it’s clear and slow enough to keep up with the video. Those women are super chill. (Also when I am rich and famous I will be buying one of their $200 balls of yarn.) I knit a cable swatch, then obviously I knew enough to just make up a hat pattern without ever knitting a hat. lol.
The first half of the hat knit up very quickly, and I was having so much fun with it, that I made myself stop after a while because I knew I would be sad and miss working on it if I finished it too soon. haha
Also knitting for extended periods makes your hands very tired.
This turned out to not be a problem at all: the top half took ALL DAY to make, because I kept finishing it and then deciding that I wanted it to be longer so I would take out all the decreases and knit a few more rows and then finish it again and then want it longer again. Which was fun. I really learned how to successfully decrease the top of a hat! It turns out, that you cannot be watching House of Cards while you decrease, because it is absolutely impossible to knit and watch perilous legal intrigue AND successfully count stitches. Lesson learned.
The rest of the week, I spent pretty much getting ready to bring my brand new baby dog home from the rescue center (GOING TO VISIT ON SATURDAY OMG OMG OMG) by knitting her a ton of tiny dog scarves.
WHAT SHE NEEDS THEM OK
This is the first scarf I knitted- it’s the same pattern as I used for my cable swatch. It turned out to be too thick though, and I’m not trying to choke any animals, so I ripped it out and made a new one. For the second one I used a stitch that I learned in college called a seed stitch. It’s so cute!! I’m planning on folding it in half to make a little shawl collar. Awwhhh!!! I can’t finish it yet, because I don’t know how big her neck is, but I will probably take 1000 pictures of her when she comes home so everybody can stop worrying immediately.
AHH I don’t even have her and I am already obsessed with this dog. Hopefully we like each other when I go to visit, because the rescue is 4.5 hrs away, and I am not in the market for traveling unreasonable distances.
Next week is more knitting! I’ll be finishing my dog scarves, a second hat, maybe conquering the world!!
